BCN Publisher Wesley Brown recognized at 2021 Arkansas Press Association Awards

By BCN Staff Reporter Mecca Hinnant – Aug. 5, 2021 — Arkansas  Press Association (APA) awarded Wesley Brown and the Daily Record staff awards in several categories during the 2021 Better Newspaper Editorial Contest on July 23.

The APA was founded in 1873 to serve the public and newspapers of Arkansas. They strive to provide all members with essential information as well as training opportunities to grow, develop and compete in the evolving media marketplace. APA hosts two Better Newspaper Editorial Contests each year recognizing dozens of notable writers and staff from various publications for their work.

Publisher of The Daily Record since November 2019, Brown received first place in the News and Political Column for large weeklies category for his article, Brown on Business: COVID-19 that addressed the impact COVID-19 had on various businesses in Arkansas.

Brown’s staff at the Daily Record received the following awards: First Place in Best Graphic Design Portfolio for Medium-Larger Weeklies, Second Place in Beat Reporter in Large Weeklies and Third place in Best Front-Page Design for Large Weeklies.

“I’ve been at the Daily Record for going on two years now, we’ve had to put in a lot of groundwork to make it through this pandemic and the staff really deserves all the credit,” said Brown.

As a professional marathon runner who also served as a track and field coach and administrator, Brown began his career in Journalism and quickly discovered his passion for reporting on stories in the world of business, politics and media relations. This year, he launched Black Consumer News, an online publication that specializes in highlighting Black stories in politics, business and life.

Brown’s reputation spans much further than the editorial world. As a member of the Arkansas Freedom of Information (FOI) Task Force, he helps to monitor and challenge legislation that threaten to violate the state’s open record laws. Recognized for his reputation of dedication and work ethic, Brown was also appoint as a board member to the National Inventors Hall of Fame (NIHF) earlier this year in March.
